Signing Class Review - QBs

When you are a KY football coach you have to come to the realization that it is a tough job. Regardless of where you play football you simply don’t win without talent and recruiting is the lifeblood of every program. There is no other football conference as competitive as the SEC and the state of KY produces fewer D1 prospects then every other state that comprises the SEC conference. KY simply isn’t at a point where it can lure the best of the best HS talent to play for the Cats and there isn’t much home grown talent to pick from. Therefore, just like the Oakland As and in the movie Money Ball, KY coaches have to find a non-traditional way to get it done on the recruiting trail. The trick is finding under valued talent that can get the job done. When Joker was hired the first thing he did was build his staff with recruiters and coaches that had contacts with HS coaches they could trust. The key is to get on kids early and get them to February. We won’t know the full results for several years, but overall this was one of the deeper classes in KY history and very well could have been our best class in decades. This is the first blog breaking down the recruits in a little more detail and in-depth perspective about their recruitment.

The most important position on the football field is quarterback and KY signed two kids they really wanted. Both do different things but they both add important pieces to the puzzle.

Patrick Towles 6’5 242 LBS 4 star QB

Towles brings everything you want to the position of QB. He is big, he is mobile and he has both a powerful and accurate arm. He also brings all of the intangibles. He has great leadership skills as shown by the fact he was the first recruit to fax in his LOI. He is a winner as shown by his multiple state championships and he has the pedigree, his grandfather is HOF pitcher and US Senator Jim Bunning. The kid simply has everything you could possible want in a scholarship athlete.

About his recruitment-Towles father and uncle graduated from the University of KY and he grew up a lifelong UK fan. Former UK QB J. Lorenzen coached him and there was very little doubt that he would be a wildcat. His recruitment ended early and Towles never waivered, not when UK struggled and not when other high profile teams like Arkansas came calling. This kid bleeds blue but Joker and Sanders proved they were worthy of his trust and commitment.

When will we see him? Like any first year college athlete it would be best to have him redshirt but I don’t think that will happen. Joker wants Towles to be the face of the program and frankly he has the physical skills and maturity to handle the position as a FR. What he doesn’t have is the experience of playing in a highly competitive HS conference. It will be a huge adjustment in complexity and speed so it will take time to adjust. Nonetheless, UK has some questions at QB both in terms of performance and health. Add in the fact that UK’s line is highly suspect at the OT position and its very likely we will see the need for more then one QB play. Preferable or not, I think Towles sees the field next year even though he has to wait until fall camp to get his first practice.

Jalen Whitlow 6’3 210 LBS QB/ATH

Whitlow solves a huge need for KY addig a legit running QB who can run and execute the Wildcat package. KY simply has to have the right fit and outside of Roark, UK really didn’t have anyone that could run the package the way UK needed it run. Whitlow gives KY that type of talent. Similar to Towels, Whitlow brings all the leadership skills you could want in a QB. He is intelligent, he works like no other and he instantly is one of the most explosive athletes on the team.

About his recruitment-Although Whitlow committed late UK had followed him for about a year. Sometimes when you are a school like KY you have to be sneaky with your recruitment. KY loved this kid all along but didn’t want to show our hand early and while some other positions had to be filled first UK was in a battle with Ole Miss and Arkansas State to secure his signature. Malzahn went so far as to have Cam Newton to call him to discuss how playing for him would benefit his development. I’m not sure the Ark State coach factored in, however, that Tee Martin coached Cam Newton and in the end Newton had to sing his praises as well.

When will we see him? I think we see him the first game as long as he develops. KY needs to be able to run some wildcat package and Whitlow can do it and I think he can do it well. He is talented enough to play some WR as well but expect to see UK get him worked in early focusing on the wildcat package similar to what you saw from M. Roark in the TN game. Hopefully when the same results.

Will The Streak End This Year?

There are severalUK questions surrounding Kentucky's game versus Tennessee this Saturday.  Like, will this be Joker Phillips last game as head coach of Kentucky?  Will Maxwell Smith start after being injured Saturday at Georgia.  And most importantly, will this be the year that the streak finally ends.

The 2011 season has been a year of disappointment for Kentucky, but it has also been a year in which some streaks has ended. Kentucky has been on the wrong end of a couple of streaks this season.  First, UK ended its streak of consecutive wins against UL after losing to the Cards 24-17 earlier this season.  Then Georgia ended UK's hope of six straight bowl appearances after knocking off the Cats 19-10 in Athens.

Yet the streak that gets the most attention to the fans as well as the players is the 26-game losing streak to Tennessee.  It is very disheartening not being able to go to a bowl, but would a win against UT put a positive note on a rough season.  Players and coaches talked about the streak in Jennifer Smith's article for Kentuckysports.com. Here are some excerpts.

The last time Kentucky beat Tennessee was in 1984.

The Vols' 26 straight wins over the Cats is the longest active win streak between two major college teams in the country,

Phillips didn't want to discuss the decades of futility on Monday.

"I'm not going to talk about the streak," the UK coach said, almost as if discussing a living, breathing thing. "I'll talk about the goal of ours to win the last game."

Tennessee Coach Derek Dooley shook off talk of the streak, as well.

"Our focus this week is Kentucky," he said. "I know a lot of people are going to want to change the focus away from Kentucky to other things like streaks and bowls and all that."

Before the scoreboard lights were turned off on UK's 19-10 loss at Georgia, which ended the bowl streak Saturday, Raymond Sanders was discussing the UT dominance.

Couch Talks UK Football

He knows a thing or two about football at Kentucky.  Tim Couch has seen his fair shCourtesy of The USA Todayare of success on the field while wearing the Blue and White jersey. Couch compiled enough passing yards and touchdowns to be ranked third in UK history at the quarterback spot.  His talent earned him a number one pick in the NFL draft to the Cleveland Browns.

Now an analyst for Fox Sports South, Couch is back in Lexington to call UK's game against Mississippi State tomorrow.  Couch gave his thoughts on Kentucky's season so far in Mark Story's article for Kentuckysports.com. Here are some excerpts.

"It's going to be fun for me to be back in Commonwealth because I don't get a chance to see Kentucky play much during the season," Couch said Wednesday. "I'm always on the road doing other games. It will be fun just to be around and see familiar faces and just be in the stadium again. I'm really looking forward to it."

"The first thing that jumps out to me is the lack of playmakers," he said. "When I think of Kentucky in recent years, they've always had a really good group of wide receivers. I don't see that right now.

"Obviously, La'Rod King has put up some nice numbers. I don't see anyone else on the outside that is going to threaten a defense or anyone else who can go up and make a play the way La'Rod can. So if you can take away one guy, they don't have a lot of options."

Last Saturday, Couch had an off week and was able to attend the Kentucky-Jacksonville State game. It's hardly surprising that one of the best quarterbacks ever to play at UK spent a lot of his time watching the current Cats signal caller.

"The thing that jumped out at me, especially early in the game, was the body language of Morgan Newton," Couch said. "I just didn't think he was playing with a lot of confidence and, rightfully so, they haven't had a lot of success offensively. They have to find a way to get him going and, especially early in games, get him some confidence going."

Trying To Stay Positive

He brought hope to a rejuvenated fan base when he committed to UK coming out of high snewtonchool.  The four star quarterback was UK's highest rated qb since Tim Couch.  Morgan Newton had the fan base a buzzing.  During his freshman year, he won 5 of 8 games after Mike Hartline went down.  He led UK when they knocked off Auburn on the road and to the Music City Bowl.  In his sophomore season he got to play in UK's bowl game against Pitt.

Fast forward to the nightmare that is 2011 season for the UK Wildcats.  The junior out of Carmel Indiana has UK in unfamiliar territory facing their facing a bowl drought for the first time in 6 tries.  Newton has been unfairly blamed for all of UK's offensive woes this season.  Yet through it all, the QB is trying to stay positive.  John Clay talked with Newton in his latest article for Kentuckysports.com. Here are some excerpts.

Through six games, the junior from Carmel, Ind., is completing just 45.7 percent of his passes. He's thrown six touchdowns, compared to seven interceptions. His 86.5 pass efficiency rating falls well outside the Southeastern Conference's top 10. His offense ranks 118th out of 120 nationally in average yards per game.

And, oh yeah, last time out, in a 51-point loss at South Carolina, Newton completed just four of 20 passes for 17 yards. His passer rating was 16.7.

"Sunday when we met," said quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator Randy Sanders last week, "I just kind of gave him a hug."

This season, his experience and athleticism was to buoy an offense missing play-makers Randall Cobb, Derrick Locke and Chris Matthews. That hasn't happened.

Only twice has Newton's passer rating been above 100. Only against Louisville, in a losing cause, has he completed more than 50 percent of his throws.

Struggles Go Back to 07/08

If you want to point to one of the key contributors to UK struggling this year then look to the 07-08 recruiting classes. You have to 010610_Joker_Phillipsthink back 4-5 years to remember that KY’s recruiting was basically on life support. KY was still trying to get kids interested in a program coming off probation and most of the 07 kids were committed prior to KY's bowl win in 2006.  The class UK signed in 2008 after building a little momentum was better but like the previous class still struggled to get kids through their JR/SR seasons.

Ideally, the strength of your team is in the JR/SR class and hopefully they have been redshirted. Auburn won the NC last year with 24 seniors; BSU has 25 redshirted SRs this year. Even UL, who won their bowl game last year was a senior laden team. KY is always going to struggle to recruit D1 ready talent so they simply have to be solid in recruiting kids that will stay with it and develop. When you look at the 07 class it really puts into perspective just how many problems we have had over the years.

Its not that UK hasn't had any talent, but its depth and maturity has suffered.  Its hard to look like a major college football team without experience and its even tougher to make it through the season without quality depth.
